It is official, Lt Gen (Retd) Zameeruddin Shah is appointed as the
Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Lt Gen Shah, who is currently a member of the Armed Forces Tribunal, has been appointed for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 70, whichever is earlier, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) said in a statement to media. An spokesperson from AMU said, "Lieutenant General Shah will put in his papers to the Armed Forces Tribunal and is expected to assume duties as Vice-Chancellor shortly.
Sources said President Pratibha Patil, Visitor of the University has put her seal of approval on Shah’s appointment after her return from abroad. The University has been without a properly selected Vice-Chancellor for past four months since 18th January, when former VC Prof P K Abdul Azis who retired from the office.

Earlier in the month of April, the AMU Court , the highest governing body of
the university, had shortlisted a panel of three names for the post and
forwarded it to the President. While Shah had secured 97 votes, former IAS
officer Noor Mohammad polled 85 and former IPS office Khalid Rizvi got 83 votes.
Lt. Gen. Zameeruddin Shah, born on August 15, 1948 at Meerut was an alumnus of St. Joseph 's College, Nainital. Brother of
Bollywood's popular actor Nasiruddin Shah, Lt. Gen. Zameeruddin Shah did his M.
Sc. in Defence Studies and Management from the Madras
University in 1980 and M. Phil. from
the Indore University in 1993. He served as
Chairman, of the Board of Governors of Sainik School, Purulia, West Bengal and Chairman of the management Committee of
the Army Institute of Management, Kolkata.
Lt. Gen. Shah is a recipient of the highest peace time award
of Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for
distinguished services in the army. Dr. Noor Mohammad retired from the Indian
Administrative Services on July 31, 2011. He held important positions like
Secretary, National Disaster Management Authority and Member Secretary, NCR
Planning Board.
Selection of Zameeruddin Shah is seen as a positive step for
the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh . The concerned people are very happy
with the appointment of AMU Vice Chancellor and it is expected the proposed
study centre of AMU at Kishanganj will come into existence in the short span of
time.
