London Olympics 2012 has remained highly memorable for Indians as our players made the country proud by winning 6 medals including 2 Silver and 4 Bronze. In fact, India has given best ever performance in Olympics since its first participation in 1900. While Sushil Kumar and Vijay Kumar won Silver Medal in Wrestling (Men’s 66 kg Freestyle) and Shooting (Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol) respectively, Gagan Narang (Shooting – Men’s 10m Air Rifle), Saina Nehwal (Badminton – Women’s singles), Yogeshwar Dutt (Wrestling – Men’s 60 km Freestyle) and Mary Kom (Boxing – Women’s flyweight) won the Bronze medals. This is really a matter of proud that two Indian women brought medals for the country.
Battering the Beijing Olympics 2008 performance where Indians have won 3 medals tally including one Gold and 2 Bronze medals this time the super six of India won the hearts of billion of countrymen. Beijing Olympics Bronze medalist Sushil Kumar who was flag barrier of London Olympics 2012 missed the Gold by whisker. However, he made the country crazy over by securing Silver Medal. Saina Nehwal won the first ever medal in Badminton for India in Olympics. Similarly Mark Kom made all proud by winning the tough game of Boxing. Little known Vijay Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt turned out as ‘Dark House’ and won the valuable medals. Similarly, India’s top shooter Gagan Narang made the debut for India in medal’s tally.
Olympics 2012 also witnessed big upsets like the Beijing Olympics 2008 Bronze medalist Vijender Singh could not repeat his performance. Abhinav Bhindra, the only single event Gold medalist from India in Olympics failed to give his best performance in shooting this time in London. Disappointments also came in other sports like Tennis, Weightlifting and Hockey. In fact, the Indian hockey team failed to win a single game in the London Olympics 2012.
The London Olympics 2012 is now concluded and we all are thankful to six medal winners of the country. You have really made us proud and took India in global map in the Olympics with best ever performance. However, the road doesn’t end here start preparation for 2016 Olympics Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We except doubling of medals including Gold in the mega event four years from the now. All the Best in advance. At the meantime, I will request the Government of India to appoint good people in Indian Olympics Association (IOA) so that the deserving sportspersons get a chance to participate in Olympics 2016. All the necessary assistance should be provide to them especially to those who had performed very well in Olympics 2012.
