Marwari College Kishanganj! Needs attention to restore its glory

College Education or Higher Education in Kishanganj once used to be synonymous with Marwari College (A Degree College). In fact, Marwari College was the priority for both the financially weaker and strong students. Just like the unique characteristic of Kishanganj, students too used to study in Marwari College setting aside the social status, caste and religion. Most importantly, the parents and wards of the students were quite satisfied with education of Marwari College.

Till early 1990 everything was good as the college had good principals, lecturers and staffs. Another prominent reason for good performance of Marwari College Kishanganj was its association with LNMU (Lalit Narayan Mithila University), Darbhanga. However, in 1992 the college was transferred under the aegis of newly constructed BNMU (Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University), Madhepura. Under the rule of Laloo Prasad Yadav the college became the prone of ill-management like other colleges of Bihar.

The dismal phase of Marwari College started in 1993 and onwards. Since then, the college had witnessed several changes on the post of principals, the lecturers (especially science and Maths) focused themselves more towards home tuitions instead of conducting proper classes in the colleges. The behavior of lecturers and non teaching staff changed mainly due to irregularity in payment from Lalu’s period. However, by late 1990 the payment mode improved and the college staff used to get the salary on time.

Despite the improvement in payment mode, the change in mentality of staff couldn’t be improved. And with the passing time the educational environment at Marwari College changed into mere formality of opening the college and closing the college. Now, hardly students attend classes at Marwari College. Only you will see the crowd during the admissions, examination form fill-up or fees submission time.

Another prominent reason for bad condition of Marwari College is absence of lecturers from key departments. A senior professor from Biology Department is absent from college for more than 4 years, and he is looking after the official works at BNMU, Madhepura. The NSUI, students wing of Congress has submitted many memorandums before the Bihar Governor, University VC and even MP Maulana Asrarul Haque to restore the lost glory of Marwari College. Even the College is not having the basic amenities like the clean drinking water, sports facilities, etc.

Need of the hour is that, still a fair population of Kishanganj needs college like Marwari College for education upto graduation level. In today’s costly educational system, Marwari College can be a good option for financially weak families that are not able to take higher education outside the district. We as a responsible citizen of Kishanganj should come forward to think about the ways to restore the lost glory of Marwari College. Suggestions are most welcome.
