After fighting a long battle with injuries and multiple organ failures, the 23-year-old Delhi girl Amanat died at a hospital at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore early Saturday, December 29, 2012. The girl was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a private bus nearly a fortnight ago in Mahipalpur area of the national capital. She was hospitalized in Safdarjung Hospital of Delhi in critical condition and later airlifted to Singapore.

The official statement says the girl who was admitted on Thursday morning at the multi-organ speciality facility, Mount Elizabeth Hospital, in an extremely critical condition here, died at 4:45 AM local time (2:15 AM Indian time).

The hospital chief executive officer Dr Kelvin Loh said, “We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4.45 AM on 29 Dec 2012 (Singapore time). Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side. The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss.”

The gang rape of Delhi sparked protests at India Gate and adjoining areas including in front of President’s House. Thousands joined protests and also had scuffle with Police and security officials. Water canon and tear gas along with lathi-charge were used by police to control the crowd. A constable of Delhi police was also died due to injuries followed by heart-attack.

The Delhi girl is no more but she has left many unanswered questions before the countrymen. What was her sin? Why she was raped and brutally assaulted? Why such unfortunate incidents happen at regular interval? Why the legal action is not taken yet against the culprits? This is the right time for all to wake up, especially for the country’s lawmakers to make amendments in articles of constitution related to such devilish act. At the same time, only putting in effect strict laws is not enough, it depends on us as human to behave like a good human. Untill and unless the society and nation don’t make change within itself it is not possible to stop such barbaric acts.
